At the end of every visit, my father-in-law used to say goodbye with the droll depression era sign-off:

"Write when you get work."
So I did.
Throughout my various careers — journalist, business writer, advertising copywriter, author — my primary function was putting words on paper. Now that I have more of my own time, how do I spend most of it? Writing. I just don't call it work.
